Repeat

254. His old van was parked on 5th Avenue. He was a street vendor. He brought a tiny sewing machine out of his van. "This is 100 years old," he said. "It works great. It's manually powered. I'll never sell it." His sidewalk stand was next to his van. A sign said, "We sell old stuff only." Under an awning were cardboard boxes. They contained hundreds of old maps. "I've done this forever, but now it's ending," he said. "I can't afford gas for my van. I can't afford my rent in Brooklyn. A friend of mine lives in Vermont. She said I could stay with her for a while. So I'm moving up there when summer ends. I'll be starting a new life at the age of 65! Life's something else, isn't it? You just never know. You never know where it'll take you. You never know how it'll end." 1.8
