751. The city council thinks New York City has too many laws. It wants to decriminalize certain activities. Decriminalization will result in fewer people going to jail. People will simply pay a fine, as they do for a parking ticket, instead of dealing with a criminal charge. For example, if someone pees on a sidewalk, or on a subway platform, or in a subway car, he'll pay a fine, say $1. If he poos in public, maybe $2. If he drinks alcohol in public, or litters, or jumps subway turnstiles, he'll pay a fine. The police commissioner said, "This is a slippery slope. If you decriminalize A and B, why not C and D? E and F? Why not decriminalize robbery? Taken to the extreme, why not decriminalize murder? Murder someone, pay a $10,000 fine. Sounds crazy now, but given enough time, it'll get a green light, just like same‐sex marriage." 6.7
