2. What's one of the nicest things in life? A quiet apartment, that's what. Soundproof walls, floors, ceilings, and windows. Frequently I hear my neighbor's TV. I keep promising to buy myself earplugs, but I never do. Wouldn't it be nice if we could just turn off our ears? You know, like we "turn off" our eyes by closing our eyelids? My grandma was able to turn off her ears. She just turned down her hearing aids—often while I was talking to her! Maybe in the future, humans will develop "earlids."

Another frequent noise—horns—comes from the street below. Sometimes, in fact, a car driver honks his horn so loudly that I actually jump a little in my chair. What can you do about such noise? Complain to the neighbor? Sure, if you want an instant and permanent enemy. Hold up a "Please Don't Honk!" sign on the sidewalk? Good luck with that. They'll honk at you and your sign! Whoever comes up with the solution will become rich. And loved by all. 3.2, 175
